The humorist Will Rogers said, “Not all of us can be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and cheer as the heroes pass by”. The mission of Volusia Honor Air is to extend our deepest appreciation and gratefulness to our WWII heroes for their bravery and sacrifice by escorting as many ambulatory World War II veterans as possible to the new World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, at no costs to those veterans.
Earl Morse, a Physician Assistant and Retired Air Force Captain working in a small Veteran's Clinic in Springfield, Ohio conceived the Honor Flight program. Shortly after the World War II Memorial was completed and dedicated in May of 2004, Earl discussed the Memorial with several of his patients at the clinic. Realizing many would not be able to make the trip on their own, Earl recruited fellow pilots into a volunteer organization to transport the veterans to Washington to visit THEIR Memorial at no charge to the Veterans.
In 2006, Jeff Miller of Hendersonville, NC organized flights for local Veterans, and Henderson County Honor Air was born. Working with Earl Morse, Jeff co-founded the Honor Flight Network. Jeff's story, and that of the first attending vets, was aired on CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood. To date, dozens of Honor Flight missions were flown and funded by the grateful citizens of a thankful nation.
These vets quite literally saved the world from domination by the forces of Hitler’s Third Reich and the Empire of Japan. Risking their lives, they did so bravely and with honor. Their accounts are surely marked, “Paid in Full”. We seek to honor them and give them this fleeting opportunity to visit the great city they saved and the memorial built in their honor.
The three Rotary Clubs in DeLand, Florida joined forces to organize the first Honor Air flight in the Central Florida area. The first Volusia Honor Air flight will occur September 27, 2008. To sponsor a vet to attend an Honor Air flight or to make a donation, please visit our Sponsorships page.
Additional information about Honor Air can be found on our Trip Factspage, and you can download an application for a veteran who wishes to attend.
